The Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports conservation of amphibians and reptiles.
Over the next five years, ARC will focus on three strategic goals, and will launch one or more campaigns or programs to address these goals.
Note: A minimum of 80% of all donations to campaigns will go towards direct support of this campaign.
Given acute threats such as habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation, ARC will launch campaigns to help restore, improve, or create new amphibian & reptile habitats and habitat components.
Acre for acre, healthy wetlands produce and support more biomass than nearly any other habitat type in North America. In addition to rare plants, migratory waterfowl and other, more well-known taxa, wetlands are essential to the life history of many herpetofaunal species. In particular, wetlands provide critically important breeding habitat for amphibians (frogs and salamanders). Whether ephemeral, semi-permanent or permanent, each type of wetland hosts its own unique assemblage of species, many of whom are partially or entirely dependent on a particular type of wetland to assure population sustainability and avoid extinctions.
Working with our partners, ARC will develop programs that will restore or create a minimum of 17 wetlands across North America by 2017. Each wetland restoration or creation project will be carefully planned with specific objectives, and executed to assure that it meets the needs of the local biodiversity and results in an ecologically appropriate component of the surrounding landscape. In particular, created wetlands will be overseen by cutting-edge experts to ensure that these function naturally within the local system. In addition to the direct local positive effects of wetlands restoration and creation, ARC will take advantage of opportunities within these projects to conduct hands-on workshops in order to train biologists, managers, and others interested in the creation or restoration of wetlands habitats.
Projected Wetlands Restoration and Creation Costs Over 5 Years:
$153,000 ($9,000 per wetland)
